Sathu Mavu Powder – Home made Super Energy Drink powder


No Protein shakes, Energy drinks comes close to this one!!!! Home made “Sathu Mavu” (Literal Translation: Energy Powder) with sprouted grains, Ragi powder, brown rice and puffed dal. Three days of drying, dry fry to remove any residual moisture and grind before enjoying the energy drink.
This makes an amazing drink For young and the old, athletes, workaholics :), constantly running errand moms and the list goes on… This powder can be used in so many ways. 
First, let’s look at how to make the sathu mavu. The first step is to figure out which grains you would want to use to make your sathu mavu. Typical set of grains are:

  
1. Wheat berries

2. Bengal gram (kothu kadalai in Tamil, Channa in Hindi, Kadale in Kannada & Senagulu in telugu)

3. Garbenzo beans (kabuli channa)

4. Green gram (Mung berries)

5. Black gram (Full Urad)

6. Horse gram (Kollu in Tamil, Huruli in Kannada)

7. Red millet (Ragi)

8. White millet

9. Sorghum (Jawar)

10. Brown rice

11. Puffed dal (pottukadalai)
In my current batch, instead of using sprouted wheat berries and Ragi, I have substituted with store bought Ragi flour and stone ground wheat flour (Bob’s Mills).

   
    
    
    
   

1. Measure all the grains (except brown rice and puffed dal) in equal quantity and soak overnight. 

2. Strain the water in the morning and cover the grains containers with a thick kitchen towel and let it rest for 2 days. 

3. Once the grains are sprouted, Sun dry the grains for 2-3 days depending on which part of the World you are in.  

4. As the grains are getting completely dried, wash the brown rice and let it Sun dry as well for a day. 

5. Dry fry all ingredients in low flame and grind into fine powder.

6. You can also divide it into 2 batches. In one of the batch, add a handful of nuts (Almonds, Cashews, Pistacheos, Walnuts, Sunflower seeds etc.), 2-3 cardomom pods and grind it separately. You can use this batch to make sweet kanji (porridge) & Sathu urundai.

7. Store the Sathu Mavu in an air tight container. 
Sathu Mavu recipes:

1. Savory Sathu Drink: (2-3 glasses)

Ingredients:
1. Sathu Mavu – 2-3 tsps (depending on how thick you want your drink to be)

2. Yogurt or buttermilk 

3. Green chillies, curry leaves, cilantro & mint

4. Asafetida

5. Cumin seeds (Jeera) – ½ tsp

6. Salt as per taste

Method:

1. Boil a glass of water in a pan.

2. Mix 2 tsp of Sathu mavu & a pinch of salt with a little bit of water and pour it into the boiling water. Stir and cook until it gets thick like oatmeal.

3. Finely chop 1 green chilli, 3-4 curry leaves and a sprig of cilantro. You can add mint as well.

4. Crush the jeera & Asafetida

5. Mix all the ingredients to the cooked Sathu mavu, add buttermilk and whisk until all ingredients are mixed well. Chill and enjoy the Savory Sathu drink.

2. Sweet Sathu mavu drink (To make 1 coffee mug size)

Ingredients: 

1. Sathu Mavu – 2 tsps (if you added a batch with nuts, use that for this recipe) 

2. Warm Milk – 1 coffee mug

3. Sugar – 1 tsp

Method:

1. Mix the Sathu Mavu and sugar to the warm milk and mix well and enjoy the drink.
